Chai and Welcome to the 18th San Diego Jewish Film Festival.
2008 is our Chai year, and we have a line-up of films befitting this milestone. With a wealth of good films to choose from, it was difficult to make cuts, but we can safely say that we are showing the best of the best. Inquire about our underwriting packages and festival passes to get the best deal and the most movie-viewing pleasure. With ticket sales only able to cover 25 percent of our costs, your financial support is the key to our continued success, and we extend a heartfelt thank you to our 2008 underwriters.
We share our anniversary with Israel’s 60th anniversary, wonderfully represented at the Festival. From ferociously dramatic Beaufort - Israel’s submission for Best Foreign Language Picture at the Academy Awards - to Jellyfish - the winner at the Cannes Film Festival for Best First Feature - to the juicy, highly addictive and highly popular miniseries A Touch Away, we have a wonderfully varied representation of Israel’s blossoming film industry.
In addition to Israeli films, we have films from England, Canada, France, Germany and New Zealand, among others.
This year, we welcome Francine Ginsburg as our new Chair, and we are pleased
to announce the appointment of a Curator, Ilise Gersten Bush. As a former documentary filmmaker and native San Diegan, she focuses on our film selection process and loves to hear from Festival goers, regarding suggestions for films.
Our Festival is also growing with new Year-Round Programming. Look for special events throughout the year. On April 5, we are proud to present our biggest event in Festival history: The restored 1925 film His People, accompanied by a live jazz band with original score, at the newly restored Balboa Theatre.
So, grab a bag of popcorn, sit back and enjoy. See you at the movies!
