Working on the San Diego Jewish Film Festival is always a fantastic journey.
It’s magical how eleven months after saying goodbye to the last Festival a brand
new one, entirely unique from all that preceded it, takes shape.
At every turn, we seek to bring diversity, laughter, enlightenment, and history
through the films that are chosen. We hope to engage the audience in conversation
and thought following every film. We work to provide a window for the Jewish and
non-Jewish community to learn something new, and to laugh and cry together.
This year’s line-up of films touches on many universal themes including:
sweet and sorrowful family relationships, (Brothers Shadow, Out of Faith), heroism
(Rape of Europa, Out of Sight), and survival that results in faith and growth
(Forgiving Dr. Mengele, Olga).
Of course, it’s not really magic, but rather the efforts and vision of many people
that help make the Festival happen. The San Diego Jewish Film Festival commands
almost two hundred volunteers, thirteen committees and a dedicated board and staff
that make it all happen every year. When the Festival opening night finally arrives, we
are rejuvenated by the excitement in the air, the reflection of how everyone’s hard
work has come to fruition, and an appreciation that once again the audience is filling
up the seats to watch some great films.
