This class teaches steps and styles used in musical theatre, past and present, which include basic partnering techniques; a focus on stage projection; developing stage characters and auditioning skills. This is a must for any actor wanting to develop their triple threat! You must take the Survey of Dance Workshop (on January 10th for the Winter Session enrollment or February 21st for Spring enrollment) as a pre-requisite for this class.

The base for every dance in musical theatre is ballet, so every performer should have at least basic ballet training.  By taking this class you will learn everything you need to know to make it through any musical number with flying colors. But this is not your grandmother’s ballet class --no tights required!  Techniques learned in this class will be used in a fun and interesting contemporary style numbers at the final Sharing class for parents and family. You must take the Survey of Dance Workshop (on January 10th for Winter Session enrollment or February 21st for Spring Session enrollment) as a pre-requisite for this class.

As a J*Company jr. student you will get the chance to learn all aspects of theatre and perform a play by the end of the course. This course is meant to help budding young artists, who desire to be in a J*Company production, increase their knowledge of all things theatre and prepare them for future J*Company auditions when they turn seven.

What Makes My Voice Different: For Girls

This MUST HAVE class for every female performer guides each singer in identifying which vocal type they are through the Fach System” and also how it can develop over their singing career. Did you know that there are 12 specific female voice types, not just soprano and alto?  This class explains how each female voice is different and why in a fun and relaxing environment.  The students will also learn how to build their voice from the inside out and how it is a life-long process giving each artist the opportunity to take ownership of their voice and learn that having one’s own unique sound will be a major advantage in the performing arts.

Slaps, Knaps & Swords

A stage combat class for those kids who like to live on the edge!  Stage combat is a great tool to learn, but it must be taught safely.  Students will learn fight choreography, acting scenes, and how to use their body as an instrument.

Cue To Cue

This is an exciting acting class which teaches students about timing, characterization and technique. Students will learn how to incorporate all the skills learned in class and will perform in a short play for family and friends at the final Sharing class.

Musical Theatre I: A Salute to Broadway!

Come sing, dance and act out some of the most famous songs from Broadway musicals. Students will be taught music from their favorite Broadway shows, then work together to choreograph and stage numbers at the final Sharing class for parents and family.  Students will learn projection, stage presence and gain confidence for future auditions.  This is an opportunity for your budding young artist to sing solos, as well as work together as an ensemble and perform in front of an audience in a friendly environment.

Musical Theatre II: An Advanced Broadway Salute!

A class for our older students who are interested in all aspects of musical theatre; students will learn what it takes to make it in the world of musical theatre while being taught music from their favorite Broadway shows. This is a great opportunity for young artists with prior experience to not only create characters, learn how to act a song in solo singing work but to also work together to create a staged performance for invited friends and family at the final sharing!

Acting 101

Hey kids!  Grow and stretch your abilities in a fun environment full of experimentation and freedom.  You, too, can become more comfortable on stage by interacting with students who are at the same acting level as you!  All children, from the shy to the outgoing can develop at their own pace, with plenty of positive encouragement to discover their full potential.   Learn beginning acting skills, play fun theater games, perform improv., and even perform a short memorized script!

Advanced Acting For Tweens

Want some serious acting training? This class is for tweens who are serious about taking their craft to the next level.  Features acting exercises, monologue and scene work.  You'll also learn some great auditioning tips (audition dos and don'ts), improvisation skills, how to work on your stage presence, and techniques to get into character. Even if you've starred in your school's drama productions, it always helps to flex your acting muscle with new peeps in fun, new situations. For serious, advanced students of theatre.

Professional Summer Auditions –Winter Session

Ages 10-18 Sunday, January 31 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Each summer there are many opportunities for young artists to audition for professional theatre companies throughout San Diego --are you ready?  Every good actor should be prepared and ready to audition at a moment’s notice. This workshop, taught by J*Company Artistic Director, Joey Landwehr and Musical Theatre whiz, Rayme Sciaroni, is for those who have an audition song prepared and are ready to go!  You will not only learn how to improve your audition skills through constructive criticism, but you will also learn about the professional audition process as a whole. Enrollment in this workshop will be limited to allow for plenty of time for the individual attention that is needed.  You must come to class prepared with a head shot, resume and audition song along with sheet music and ready to perform.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 

  • All students ages 7 - 12 must be enrolled in a J*Company class during the classes session of the show they are auditioning for.
  • JCC MEMBER BENEFIT! Each JCC membership (single or family) is entitled to sign up for one free class (up to $77) during their annual membership year. All workshops and additional classes are subject to the regular member price.
  • Please make attending classes a priority for your young artist and be sure to mark your calendar for the Sharing Class, which is the final class of the session for parents to experience along with the students.
  • If J*Company must cancel a class, due to insufficient enrollment, any fees paid will be refunded in full.
